    1. Paros

    Best for: Stunning beaches.

    Easily reachable from Athens by plane or ferry, Paros is part of the Cyclades and it's proximity to Mykonos, Santorini and Naxos makes it perfect for island-hopping. The once lesser-known spot has been gaining in popularity in recent years, with celebrities like Salma Hayek spotted vacationing here. When you're not relaxing on one of Paros's amazing beaches – like Santa Maria, Marcello or Kolymbithres – make sure you take you a stroll around Naoussa town, undeniably its chicest spot, where some of the island's best restaurants and buzziest bars.     2. Milos

    Best for: Dramatic coastlines.

    Chances are you've seen Milos – and its ubiquitous moonscape rock beaches – on Instagram in recent years, as it is fast becoming the Cycladic island for those in the know. Its ample beaches are considered some of the Aegean's most pristine – and some of the best beaches in Europe – so we’d recommend hiring a motorboat for a beach-hopping day trip. Elsewhere, there are plenty of other activities to pass the time if you get bored of sunbathing. You can go hiking, wander the streets of the island’s traditional villages, visit archaeological sites, sample local wine in picturesque waterfront bars and even go snorkelling.     3. Samos

    Best for: Caving.

    Situated in the eastern Aegean Sea, Samos is easily reached by a two-hour ferry from Turkey or a direct flight from Athens, yet despite this, it's one of the lesser-known spots. Despite being just 183 sq. miles, it sure packs a lot of variety in to a small area: quiet beaches to sunbathe on; a pretty waterfront to wander around; mountains to hike for spectacular views; buzzing nightlife in Vathy town; wine tasting; and one-of-a-kind cave experiences, with two caves to explore (Cave of Pythagoras and the Panagia Spiliani Monastery).     4. Hydra

    Best for: Accessibility from Athens.

    Just a two-hour ferry journey from Athens, Hydra is the chic, classy, grown-up sister of the Greek islands. What it lacks in sandy beaches, it makes up for with old-school glamorous charm, with Dolly Alderton a recent convert to its charms. The filming set for various films and a favourite amongst the A-list (from Leonard Cohen to Olivia Palermo), you won't find any cars on Hydra, and people get about by foot, boat or donkey ride (yes, really). It's particularly popular with hikers, with routes taking you through beautiful hills to old monasteries, secluded beaches, and viewpoints over the Saronic Sea.     5. Corfu

    Best for: Variety.

    Certainly not one of the Ionian islands' secret escapes, what Corfu lacks in seclusion, it makes up for in character and entertainment. A long-time favourite with the royal family (the late Prince Philip was born here) it boasts white sand beaches, buzzing nightlife, historic past and a mix of Venetian, French and English cultures, Corfu town really does have something for everyone.     6. Lefkada

    Best for: Breathtaking beaches and water sports.

    With direct flights from London and accessible directly from the mainland thanks to a small bridge, it's a wonder the tiny Ionian island of Lefkada isn't more popular amongst tourists. But we're not complaining. The jaw-droppingly beautiful, cliff-backed beaches are the main draw here – head to Egremni and Porto Katsiki, as well as Gialos and Kathisma on the west coast. Water sports fanatics flood to the south coast for windsurfing and kite-surfing (Lefkada is known as the windsurfing capital of Europe, after all). Surfing not your thing? Spend time hopping over to neighbouring islands including Ithaca and Kefalonia, with ferries running from Nidri and Vasiliki. A stay here is also the perfect jumping off point for visiting some of the other Ionian islands, including Meganissi and Skorpios. The island is dotted with villas, but for a five-star stay, look no further than Porto Galini Seaside Resort & Spa on the east coast of Lefkada, near to Lefkada town and the popular Nidri village.     7. Santorini

    Best for: Honeymoons.

    Santorini really needs no introduction – it is the well-heeled queen bee of the Greek islands, after all. There may be queues to take photos of the sun sinking behind the caldera, but it's still a remarkable view that will stick with you long after you've boarded the plane home. The best thing to do in Santorini is simply soak up the sun and the views across the white-washed buildings to the sea from your suite – most of which are found in Oia and Imerovigli – but you can also head on volcano tours, boat excursions and hiking trips. Book in at the newly-opened Nobu Hotel Santorini, which despite Santorini's crowds, offers total privacy thanks to its beautiful clifftop location offering stunning views, and spacious rooms, suites and poolside villas.     8. Crete

    Best for: Families.

    Crete is Greece's largest island and is an excellent all-rounder if you're looking for a holiday full of variety: pristine beaches (for relaxation or water sports, or both); buzzing nightlife; delicious Cretan cuisine; lofty mountains made for hiking; ancient ruins; and culture and history etched onto virtually every corner. Hike through the Aradena Gorge, explore the Bronze Age ruins of Palace of Knossos, marvel at Samaria Gorge, or bask in the Mediterranean sunshine at Elafonisi, Falassarna or Balos beaches. Niko Seaside Resort MGallery is one of the most exciting new Cretan properties, opening its doors back in April 2022. The adults-only seaside hotel is situated in the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos on the east of the island, 10 minutes from the town centre and walking distance to the famous Voulismeni Lake.     9. Naxos

    Best for: Sandy beaches and sunsets.

    Naxos is famed for its miles and miles of sandy beaches (no doubt thanks to its size as the biggest island in the Cyclades), yet it still trails behind the likes of Santorini and Mykonos in popularity, which to be honest, is a bit of a head-scratcher. But everyone else's loss is your gain, as you can enjoy uncrowded hotels, tavernas and bars almost any day of the week. As well as flying and flopping, other options include horse rides across the beach at Plaka, or exploring Naxos's many pretty, sleepy villages like Chora and Halki. Stay at small boutique bolthole Glaros, perched on the beach of Saint George and a short walk to Naxos centre.

    10. Kefalonia

    Best for: Big groups.

    Kefalonia, also spelt Cephalonia, was put on the map back in 2001 for being the filming location for Captain Corelli's Mandolin starring Penelope Cruz, and has only increased in popularity since then (Kate Moss even spent her 2011 honeymoon here). With its impossibly turquoise water, pretty villages teeming with restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood, and endless hills and caves to explore, Kefalonia is a Greek island not to be missed. Don't forget to spend an afternoon at Myrtos Beach, just north of Argostoli, which is often ranked amongst the top 10 beaches in Greece.     11. Ios

    Best for: Island hopping.

    A Cycladic island nested between Santorini and Naxos, Ios (or Io or Nio) is often dubbed the party capital of the Greek islands, but to do so would be to do it a disservice – because it's not all shots and pumping music. Ios boasts one of the largest beaches in Greece (Mylopotas), as well as historical sites such as Homer's tomb, plus foodie hotspots like Diaseli Cheesery, where you can try local cheeses. Undoubtedly the best place to stay on Ios has to be Instagram-famous Calilo. An ideal retreat for couples looking to stay on a quieter, more remote side of the island, Calilo is situated on Papas Beach and carved out of native rock, with striking architecture and interior design (think handcrafted mosaics, driftwood features and intricate tiling). The 30 suites, most with their own private plunge pools and waterfalls, offer an unforgettable experience.

    12. Folegandros

    Best for: Unspoiled charm.

    We can't gate-keep this hardly-known Cycladic gem any longer. Between Santorini and Paros, Folegandros is quiet and rustic, with an authentic, boho atmosphere that truly makes you feel like you're getting away from it all. Head to tranquil, secluded beaches (such as Livadaki), visit the picturesque villages (Chora should be your first port of call) and munch on succulent, fresh seafood from one of the traditional tavernas. A testament to its growing popularity – all the more reason to visit before too many other tourists cotton on – Folegandros is welcomed its first ultra luxury five-star boutique resort last May. At Gundari, you'll find 27 exquisitely designed suites and villas, each with their own private infinity pools offering spectacular views over the cliff's edge into the Aegean. Don't miss the restaurant headed up by Greece's first Michelin star chef Lefteris Lazarou, or the subterranean spa offering blissful treatments using native ingredients.

    13. Serifos

    Best for: Authenticity & tourist-free beaches

    Unlike its neighbours in the Cyclades, Serifos remains an untouched, virtually crowd-free hidden gem in the Greek islands. Just a two-hour ferry from Athens, the island is quiet and peaceful; this is where you come to laze on tourist-free beaches, hike in rugged hills and eat delicious Greek food on the seafront. Some of the best beaches include Psili Ammos, Skala and Sikamia, accessible by bumpy dirt roads or by renting a boat from the man harbour in Livada. The majority of accommodation is found on the south coast – try Galazio Suites perched on Livadakia Beach, with 12 stylish rooms and suites built into traditional Cycladic architecture.     14. Mykonos

    Best for: Hen parties.

    There is plenty more to do on the profoundly beautiful island of Mykonos besides sunbathe on its many spectacular beaches and sip cocktails in its ever-growing collection of five-star hotels. Catch a boat to nearby Delos (an archaeological site said to be the birthplace of Apollo), take a guided tour to see the island's famous windmills of Kato Mili and Paraportiani church, grab dinner at one of Mykonos Town or Little Venice's waterfront restaurant as the sun sets, then head for a night on the tiles at one of Mykonos's famed clubs (Lío Mykonos – a spectacular mix of cabaret, fine-dining and high-class clubbing – is our favourite). Perhaps the most impressive hotel on the island is Cali Mykonos, a luxury hotel on Mykonos's quieter, untouched east coast. Nestled between mountains and protected from the seasonal Mykonian winds, Cali Mykonos is perched above its own private beach—a rarity in Mykonos—with unobstructed views of the endless Aegean Sea.     15. Andros

    Best for: Hiking.

    Only a couple of hours on the ferry from Athens, little-known Andros offers a treasure trove of attractions for nature-lovers that other Cycladic islands lack: cascading waterfalls, verdant valleys and rolling, rugged hills made for rambling. Indeed, across Andros you'll find over 25 well-connected hiking trails that lead you to picturesque villages, fortified monasteries, abandoned chapels and wild, secluded beaches which are popular with keen windsurfers. Perhaps best suited to the adventure-seekers amongst us, it's certainly not a fly and flop destination. Most hotels are located in the capital Chora, but some are also found in coastal villages of Batsi and Gavrio. If it's the hiking trails you're after, make sure to visit outside of the scorching summer months – May and October are best.

    16. Kos

    Best for: Nightlife.

    The second most popular Dodecanese island after Rhodes, Kos is a lively island famed for its abundance of sandy beaches and exciting nightlife, the latter of which has somewhat sullied its reputation in recent years. But the naysayers are wrong! This perfected sized island is has a beautiful town and idyllic beaches, many of which are totally unspoilt. Pitch up at Ikos Aria, offering panoramic views over the Aegean Sea and the beautiful small island of Kastri, situated opposite the hotel's beach, featuring a blue church on a rocky verdant outcrop. Located just 100 metres away, the islet is within swimming distance from Ikos Aria's beach.     17. Patmos

    Best for: History buffs.

    Patmos is a small island in the north of the Dodecanese, famous for being the location where many believe the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament, was written by John of Patmos (or John the Divine). As a result, the island plays an important part in sacred Christian pilgrimage. Patmos certainly feels like stepping back in time with its many historical sites – don't miss the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian; the Cave of the Apocalypse; and the capital Chora, a white-washed village with meandering cobbled streets, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In recent years it's been dubbed as one to watch, gaining in popularity as tourists eschew the more obvious islands. Just south of the main part of Skala you'll find Patmos Aktis Suites & Spa, a stylish sanctuary on Grikos Bay with views of the bright-blue Aegean. The hotel boasts the island's only five-star wellness centre, making it the ideal spot for some real R&R.

    18. Syros

    Best for: Culture.

    The administrative capital of the Cyclades islands, charming Syros is also one of the group's smallest (and most underrated) islands. Instead of the typical Cycladic wash of white buildings and blue rooftops and shutters, Syros is bursting with colour on every street, its neoclassical homes painted in different pastel shades. The 19th-century Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros, rich in history and culture, and is worth exploring before hiking up to the Catholic centre, Ano Syros and take in the view of Ermoupoli stretching out to the sea. Syros's coast is dotted with pretty, sandy beaches, most of which are found in the south – try Kini, Galissa and Delfini. There's a cultural scene on this little island throughout the year, with various festivals celebrating film, jazz and dance.

    19. Evia

    Best for: Wine tasting.

    Evia (or Euboea) is the second-largest Greek island after Crete and is one of the closest islands to Athens, yet it's still relatively unknown – two things that make a holiday here particularly appealing. Evia is extremely varied, from its plenty of tourist-free beaches, unforgettable mountain roads, archaeological sites and vineyards. Don't just use Evia as a pit-stop to hop off to other islands; it's well worth a few night's stay.     20. Sifnos

    Best for: Foodies.

    Located in the western part of the Cyclades, Sifnos is a peaceful, laidback island, without the heaving crowds and roaring nightlife of some of its neighbours, making it an ideal base for a relaxing romantic getaway or a family trip. While there's plenty of beaches to laze on and traditional architecture to admire, Sifnos is famed most for its food. Home to arguably the most famous Greek chef who wrote the first complete Greek cookbook in the early 1900s, Nicholas Tselementes, Sifnos is packed with traditional tavernas and high-end restaurants alike (don't miss the fresh fish at Omega3 restaurant, of which Tom Hanks is a known fan!)     21. Skiathos

    Best for: Beach bums.

    The smallest of the Sporades islands, Skiathos is undoubtedly growing in popularity for its powdery beaches and crystal clear waters, thanks in part to Mamma Mia being filmed here. Koukounaries is the most popular beach but can get busy during peak season – get there early to nab yourself a sun bed.     22. Karpathos

    Best for: Laid-back vibes.

    Karpathos (also Carpathos) is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese island and a great spot if you're looking for true tourist-free authenticity. Only the south side of the island is developed for hospitality and you won't find many ‘activities’, just pristine beaches like Kyra Panagia and Apella (popular amongst windsurfers) and a handful of traditional, family-run restaurants. Konstantinos Palace is conveniently located 500m from the centre of town and is situated right in front of the sea, with its 500 rooms offering views over the countryside or sea.

    23. Skopelos

    Best for: Nature lovers.

    Located between Skiathos and Alonissos in the Sporades islands, Skopelos is known as the greenest island in the country, making it a haven for those who love the great outdoors (check out Skopelos Walks for the best trails).     24. Zakynthos

    Best for: Hen parties.

    Forget the Zakynthos (Zante) you thought you once knew. The Ionian island just off mainland Greece has rebranded itself from the Grecian capital of the ‘lads holiday’ thanks to a growing surge in luxury hotels and peaceful resorts. Saying that, the island's nightlife scene is still thriving, making it the perfect hen party destination. It's also no secret that the beaches are like something out of a brochure (head towards Kalamaki to escape the crowds) and don't miss boat trips to the landmarks like Navagio Beach (also known as Shipwreck Beach) and the Blue Caves.     25. Rhodes

    Best for: Exploring the ancient ruins.

    Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands, and while it's not exactly one of Greece's hidden gems, it has a lot more to offer than just its beautiful beaches. The island is teeming with culture, from its impressive amount of ancient ruins and monuments (including the Acropolis of Rhodes which dates back to the 5th century BC), to its Old Town where you can visit the Street of the Knights and learn about the occupancy by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. Most of Rhodes's best hotels are found in Lindos, while exploring Rhodes Old Town – with its Byzantine churches, ruins and minarets – is like stepping back in time.     26. Tinos

    Best for: Architecture.

    Famed for its sandy beaches, religious importance and traditional architecture, Tinos is part of the Cyclades islands and accessible via a short 20-minute ferry from Mykonos. Aside from soaking up the sun on its tourist-free beaches, hiking is a popular activity in Tinos – make sure to stop off at some of the island's many monasteries. The most famous is Panagia Evangelistria, also known as the Lady of Tinos (the Patron Saint of Greece), said to be a miracle-working church which thousands of pilgrims visit every year.

The hilltop village of Chora is the old capital of the island, and it's home to plenty of whitewashed stone houses, traditional Byzantine churches, and stunning views across the Aegean Sea. Reachable by boat from the island's port, Patitiri, the famous National Marine Park of Alonnisos is a crucial refuge for rare seabirds, dolphins and the highly endangered Mediterranean monk seal.

    Best for: Skipping the crowds.

    Paxos, one of the smallest Ionian islands, is still relatively unknown to tourists, so a perfect spot to skip the crowds. Explore Paxos's tiny, quaint harbour towns, such as Gaios, from where you can walk to nearby beaches Plakes and Gianas. Surrounded by a magnificent olive grove, the suites of Paxos Blue offer panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and immediate access to a small, secluded beach with turquoise blue waters. This should definitely be your base for exploring Paxos.

    29. Antipaxos

    Best for: Getting truly off-grid.

    Directly opposite Paxos lies its stunning and even smaller little sister, Antipaxos (where Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson have a holiday home). Just 4km long, most of the tiny island's visitors are day-trippers from Paxos — but there are a few accommodation options, too. Its stunning yet relatively secluded beaches of Vrika and Voutoúmi boast exotic turquoise waters that are sensational for snorkelling, and the local wine produced from the island's vineyards is famously delicious.
