As a beauty journalist, I know I'm not supposed to “play favourites,” but lip liners are one of the few makeup products that I can't go a day without using. Neither can Jess Hunt, founder of REFY Beauty, whose first ever lip liner was Whirl by MAC Cosmetics, an extremely popular shade that's also been approved by Kylie Jenner herself. A lip liner can make her “instantly feel really pulled together and ready to go”, she told GLAMOUR.
The best lip liners are versatile, too. I'm well aware that – courtesy of Kylie Jenner – lip pencils have become practically synonymous with a precise and over-lined pout. And while there's nothing wrong with rocking that look, trust me when I tell you that there are plenty of other ways to wear lip liner everyday.
Today's formulas are creamy enough to smudge out for that natural, blurred-out look that rivals the “French girl” aesthetic. Some of the more innovative lip pencils – like the recently-launched REFY Blur Liner – feature a rounded shape that's especially made for subtle lip sculpting. Otherwise, some lip liners come in form of crayons for an “all over” pigmented finish – ideal for the days when you're rushing out the door.
And as far as lip combos go, lip liners offer no shortage of options. The traditional way is to match your lip liner to your lip gloss or lipstick, but who's to say you can't go for something bolder? Makeup is all about having fun and experimenting, after all. Consider using a darker brown pencil to outline your lips, and adding a lighter shade of lipstick in the middle, for a classic 90s get-up. For a festive look, you can create an ombre effect with a red lipstick and a darker lip liner, sealing everything together with a high-shine gloss. “It definitely makes the lips appear fuller and gives a natural finish,” Jess shared.
To help you figure out which one – out of the hundreds – lip liners out there is right for you, we've put together an edit of the best formulas out there, tried and tested by the GLAMOUR team. We've reviewed the most viral shades and variations of lip pencils, be it a celeb-adored option, a premium buy or an affordable pick. Here's everything you need to know.

How we tested the best lip liners:
Over the years, the GLAMOUR team has trialled hundreds of lip liners – from the OG formulas coming from the likes of MAC to celeb-approved iterations from Makeup Forever and newer releases such as the Glossier lip liners. When testing each lip liner formula, we make sure to assess it based on pigment, longevity and value for money. We also pay attention to whether the formula feels drying on the lips or if the pencil glides on seamlessly. Find out more about how we test.
