Mallorca is, without doubt, the chicest of the Balearics. While Ibiza is known for its dual passion for partying and wellness, Menorca is best for families, and Formentera is the undiscovered gem. How we chose the best hotels in Mallorca:
When deciding which star hotels would make the cut, we had a lot of criteria. Of course, first and foremost was access to a beach or swimming pool – because, duh, it's Mallorca, you need to catch some rays and cool off too. Other things we considered were facilities like hot tubs and tennis courts, or if there was a particularly great restaurant – after all, there are so many amazing places to eat here, you should be ticking some off. Service was also important, as well as accessibility, particularly for the family-friendly options – no one wants to be carrying a buggy up five flights of spiral staircase. We’ve factored in distance from the airport, too, plus if there’s a particularly starry recommendation from a previous celebrity guest.

Ikos Porto Petro
If you’re looking for a family-friendly hotel where the all-inclusive is distinctly on the boujee side, then you’ve come to the right place. Ikos hotels are known for being at the high end of luxury all-inclusives, with everything from Michelin-star food to Champagne on tap (or cava, this is Spain after all), yet they somehow marry this with being supremely welcoming of children, with endless activities and facilities targeting them. Located near the Mondrago National Park on the south east coast of the island, the resort boasts five swimming pools, five restaurants, a kids club and creche, three tennis courts, a gym, a spa and beach access. The best thing? No one will give you a second glance if your toddler has a tantrum by the pool or makes a mess at dinner.

Can Alomar
This beautifully restored, art-filled former palazzo is the ideal base for exploring all that Palma has to offer. Discreet – you’d be forgiven for walking past the front door – it’s got just 16 rooms, making it one of the smaller five-star hotels in the city. While there is a rooftop pool, this hotel is best suited for those who want to spend their day mooching around the nearby shops or visiting the city’s incredible museums and art galleries. Make sure to book a table for dinner at the hotel’s in-house Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant, De Tokio a Lima, as it is extremely popular with both hotel guests, tourists and locals alike – not least for its impeccable views of Paseo del Borne.

L’Avenida
With its pretty market square, vintage tram, and multitude of shops, restaurants and bars, it’s easy to see why Soller has become such a popular option for couples travelling to Mallorca sans kids. Located on a flagstone street just a few steps from all the action is L’Avenida, a turn-of-the-century townhouse that’s been lovingly transformed into a boutique hotel, with just 16 rooms and suites. With a petite swimming pool, spa treatments available in your room and endless excursions organised by the concierge, there’s plenty to keep you busy, not to mention the beach is a 10-minute stroll away. Great news for foodies too, as the lack of hotel restaurant means you can explore all the gastronomical delights Soller has to offer.

Hotel Valldemossa
One of the hottest new hotels on the island and one of the best hotels we've ever had the pleasure of visiting, Hotel Valldemossa is a must-visit for your time in Mallorca. This 12-room adults-only boutique hotel is set within a former palace, and focuses specifically on wellbeing via its Japanese-Peruvian spa, The Sanctuary. Just a 10-minute walk from the beautiful village that bears its name, the hotel is well and truly set within the Mallorcan countryside, in the Sierra de Tramuntana mountains. But while the location is rustic, the interiors are decadent and luxurious, inspired by the French aesthetic of the 1950s, with an incredible collection of local artworks.
If spa and sunbathing aren’t your bag, then there’s also ample cycling opportunities thanks to the location, with bike rental, guided routes and even repairs on offer. It would also be a crime to stay at Hotel Valldemossa and not eat at De Tokio A Lima, where Japanese and Peruvian flavours complement high-quality Mediterranean ingredients for a truly five-star dining experience (the red fish and cuttlefish with creamy rice was a particular highlight). If we can recommend one thing for your time on this wonderful island, it's to book into Hotel Valldemossa before the rest of the world catches on.

Nothing beats checking into Can Aulí, tired and weary after a flight. There is something instantly soothing about this place, housed in a former 17th-century mansion, with its sand-coloured stone walls, warm lighting and serene near-silence. Cloud-like beds and neutral decor with wooden beams continue the sense of calm in the rooms, with premium rooms offering postcard-pretty views of the old town's fairytale streets and stone houses. Breakfast is the jewel in Can Aulí's culinary crown, where a delicious buffet consists of everything from fresh fruits and vegetables, salads and cold cuts to just-baked pastries and homemade breads and cakes (á la carte is available if creamy scrambled eggs and flavour-packed beetroot and avocado toast are more your vibe). Location-wise, you couldn't be more central, with attractions such as Pollença Market and the Calvari Steps less than a 10-minute walk away.

Kimpton Aysla Mallorca
One of the most recent additions to the island, opening in October 2022, Kimpton Aysla Mallorca is a great option for those seeking winter sun, being one of the few hotels that stay open year-round. Located 14km from Palma in Santa Posa, a lively resort in the south-west of the island, it’s ideally situated for those who want to experience both beach and city break in one. Design-led, it boasts 79 art-filled rooms, plus three swimming pools (including the largest indoor pool in Mallorca) and an Asian fusion restaurant. It’s also only 10 minutes away from Santa Ponsa Beach and Puerto Portals, if you want an afternoon on the beach or a night on the tiles. Families are welcome, with a children’s pool zone and cots available on request.

Those looking for a wellness centre should check into this peaceful bolthole in the north-east of the island. The passion project of an architect and a designer, its eight bedrooms exude minimalist luxury, while its two casas and 21 casitas have the added bonus of a private pool (plus more privacy, thanks to the lush surrounding forest). Guests can indulge in meditation, breathwork and yoga, plus wholesome workshops in things like beekeeping, perfume making and art therapy, and there’s a spa complete with sauna, steam room and watsu dome – not to mention an infinity pool. Unsurprisingly, the food is just as nourishing, with restaurant Beni Axir serving an organic menu devised by local boy Rafael Nadal’s nutritionist, Gemma Bes, using ingredients grown on site.

La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel
Dubbed ‘La Res’ by those in the know, La Residencia was a favourite of Diana, Princess of Wales, and is one of the most luxurious places to stay on the island. Located in Deià, the trendy village loved by Kate Moss et al, the sprawling hotel is part of the prestigious Belmond Group, with everything that entails: namely multiple pools, gastronomic delights and beautifully decorated suites, including one designed by Matthew Williamson. Surrounded by olive and citrus groves and just a short drive from Cala Deià beach and C’as Patro March restaurant, it’s easy to see why the fashion crowd love it here. El Olivio, the hotel’s fine dining option under the stars, is impossibly romantic – we saw two proposals taking place during a four-night stay.

Four Seasons Formentor
The Four Seasons has finally arrived in Mallorca. Taking over the former Hotel Formentor, built in 1929, the new luxury opening is the result of a €25 million facelift. Thanks to its beautiful mountainside local on the coast, there are ample opportunities to connect with nature, whether that’s hiking or biking in the shade of the towering pines, or snorkelling, kayaking or swimming in the sea. The beach itself is a slice of heaven, with turquoise waters and golden sands, perfect for a fly and flop holiday if you ask us. You’ll also be spoilt for choice when it comes to food, with seven (count them!) different restaurants.

Hotel Can Simoneta
It doesn’t get more wholesome than Hotel Can Simoneta. Perched on a clifftop in a quiet area of Mallorca, it’s got private beach access as well as 600 acres of gorgeous farmland and woodland to explore. The hotel’s decor is similarly serene – think light-filled rooms, with large windows that make the most of that dramatic seaview, white muslin-draped four-poster beds and sumptuous bathrooms – with its small size (just 16 bedrooms) meaning you’ll not fight with anyone over a sun lounger. It’s all about R&R here: whether that’s having a massage amongst the pine trees, taking part in a morning sun salutation with a yoga class or having sundowners in the hot tub. The restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine, with incredible views across the bay from the outdoor terrace. There are ample places for a nightcap, too, whether that’s on one of the comfy sofas or down by the pool.

Opened to much fanfare in 2019, Palacio Can Marques is a slice of Parisian glamour in the heart of Palma. Located in the trendy La Lonja district, its unassuming entrance hides its cavernous interiors, with 13 grand suites to choose from and an impressive light-filled atrium and central staircase running to the rooftop bar. There’s a Champagne bar ready to welcome you at check-in – featuring the largest collection of Lanson in Spain – as well as a shaded courtyard restaurant serving local delicacies for breakfast and offering fine dining in the evening (the blueberry risotto stays with us to this day). Perfect for couples, we recommend the Rose or Romance rooms – the latter has a sofa by the bathtub, for an intimate tête-à-tête.

Located amongst 1,300 acres of UNESCO-listed land, Sir Richard Branson’s contribution to Mallorca’s hotel scene is as glamorous as you would expect. Once a 16th-century finca, it has been lovingly and respectfully converted, with many original features, such as angels carved on the ceiling of the chapel-turned-restaurant, left intact. It’s the ideal place for groups of friends or family, with three, four and five-bedroom self-catering villas each with a private pool, but they’d be foolish not to secure a table at the brand new Sa Tafona restaurant, which offers seafood tapas dreamed up by a Michelin-starred chef.

Cap Vermell Grand Hotel
It would be easy to get lost in this sprawling 142-room complex, which was designed in the style of a traditional Mallorcan hilltop village, but what a lovely thing that would be. After all, there are three impressive pools, a warren-like spa offering a wide range of indulgent treatments (don't miss the heated quartz sand bed, which helps relieve muscle tension) and three restaurants (including one, VORA, which is Mallorca’s only two-Michelin-star restaurant). If you do want to leave, there’s Canyamel beach half a mile away, plus the town of Artà with its famous caves, as well as ample cycling and hiking options. Rooms are amply-sized and simply decorated, all with Diptyque toiletries and balconies or terraces – two essentials if you ask us.

Situated in the oldest neighbourhood in Palma, La Calatrava, El Llorenç Parc de la Mar effortlessly marries the old with the new, paying homage to the building’s medieval past while bringing its interiors into the 21st century. Case in point: its buzzy rooftop infinity pool – the longest in the city – where a well-heeled crowd of creatives spend the day dozing on the Balinese sunbeds or admiring the 360-degree views of the Old Town and Palma Bay. Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden
Tucked away in the heart of Palma’s idyllic Old Town, Bordoy Grand House & Garden is a veritable oasis from the hustle and bustle of the cobblestoned centre, and is ideal for those who want total relaxation within walking distance of restaurants, shops and galleries. Originally a 16th-century mansion, many of the original features have been maintained or recreated, and the 24 rooms are positively cavernous, with a mixture of antique furniture and non-intrusive mod-cons. Arturo + LaurenCan Ferrereta
One of the hottest new additions to Mallorca’s hotel luxury scene, having opened in April 2021, Can Ferrereta has swiftly become a favourite with the jet-set. Located in the lesser-known south-east of the island, in the historic centre of Santanyí, it occupies a 17th-century mansion in a gorgeous pastoral setting. What it lacks in sea views, it makes up for in lush bougainvillaea-filled gardens, with a 25-metre saltwater pool to cool off in. It’s not all bucolic loveliness,s though – there’s also a rather impressive art collection, featuring the likes of Joan Miró, Miguel Planas and Bárbara Vidal. There are two restaurants – La Fresca, for casual poolside dining during the day, and Ocre, where diners can enjoy tasty local dishes in the atmospheric former wine cellar.

Arturo + LaurenSant Francesc Hotel
The rooftop pool at Sant Francesc Hotel is the place to see and be seen in Palma, giving off a sort of Shoreditch House with sunshine vibe. Palma Riad
One of the most romantic hotels in Palma, it’s easy to see why the adults-only Palma Riad is popular with couples. Featuring sumptuous interior design (think deep velvet curtains, golden parrot lampshades, chandeliers, lacquered furniture), each of the 11 suites has a fireplace and four-poster bed (the hotel would make a lovely winter destination), and some of the ensuite bathrooms boast mosaic tiled hammam baths the size of small swimming pools. The cocktail bar is one of Palma’s finest, and the recently opened restaurant serves Mediterranean fusion. Breakfast can be taken in the pretty courtyard of the hotel. Few hotels have as dramatic a location as Cap Rocat, a former military fortress that practically clings to the cliffside overlooking Palma Bay. This feeling continues in the world-class spa, which is found deep underground in the most sheltered part of the fortress, where you can enjoy a range of spoiling treatments including various hammam experiences. Hotel Son Net
Once the palacio home of the Net family, Hotel Son Net has changed hands in recent years, undergoing an ambitious 2.5-year renovation by the owners of Finca Cortesian in Marbella. The end result was unveiled in May 2023, showcasing opulent, unique bedrooms (each of the 31 has its own design, including the six poolside cottages), multiple pools, shaded private cabanas, tended lawns and flowerbeds. The restaurant, Mar & Duix, retained its original chef, who focuses on local cuisine with ingredients sourced from the ecological vegetable garden, while the private vineyard produces the house wine. Barely a 30-minute drive from Palma, it feels a world away from city life.

Which part of Mallorca is best to stay in?
Palma de Mallorca is the island’s capital city and cultural heart. Its beautiful Old Town (one of the best preserved Gothic centres in Europe) is home to many historic landmarks (such as Bellver Castle), museums and galleries (don’t miss the Fundació Miró Mallorca, dedicated to the famous artist), as well as Michelin-star restaurants (Zaranda is one of the oldest and the best), not to mention rooftop terrace, exclusive nightclubs, outdoor pools and picture-perfect beaches, natch.
In terms of sandy beaches and coves, the east coast has rustic, secluded options, like Cala Llombards, known for its impossibly turquoise waters, as well as more spacious ones, like Cala Torta (no overlapping towels here). The north-east has the best-known beaches in the resort town of Alcudia, while the north-west boasts the slightly quieter Cala Tuent. There are also plenty of charming Spanish villages and rustic fincas to visit: Port de Soller, Palma Nova, Cala Ratjada, Can Pastilla, Port de Pollença, Cala Millor and Santa Osa.
