Denim has been a fashion staple since the ‘50s, but this season it’s making its way from your wardrobe and into your beauty routine with denim blue makeup set to trend for spring.

Of course, moving toward pretty pastels as the weather warms up is not exactly new, but while soft lilacs have been headlining for the past couple of years, some major beauty brands have put their weight behind denim blue as the shade to take off for 2025.

Both Charlotte Tilbury and Victoria Beckham have recently released entire eyeshadow palettes devoted to different shades of blue with the launch of Denim Dimension and Navy Noir, respectively. Dior spotlit the shade in its spring Glowmania collection with a sub-edit focused around “Bluemania”, a shimmering pale denim shade available in lip gloss, lip balm, eyeshadow and nail polish form. Sephora has a bold blue liquid liner and mascara ready to go for anyone looking to skip trad black, and Jones Road has added an inky navy shade to its collection of gel liners.

But, while denim is an established neutral in the fashion-sphere, blending blue across our eyes and nails may seem a little out-there, so we asked the GLAMOUR team to try the shade for size and feedback on whether denim blue makeup can fit as comfortably into their makeup bag as it does their wardrobe…

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this injection of colour to my make-up. I usually prefer a clean palette with a natural glow and tend to avoid anything outside my skin tone. However, this felt like a fun accessory, accentuating my features. It was easy to apply and volumised my lashes for an impactful look. The cobalt colour is gorgeous and I've been obsessed with it as a beauty trend since seeing it on the models at Chet Lo SS25. Mascara feels like an approachable way to dive into it. To maintain a contemporary feel, I would definitely still keep the rest of my makeup minimal.

I'm not a blue girl. Give me neutral tans, buffs and bronzes any day of the week and I'm happy, but, there was something about the shades in this palette (particularly the top left) that I felt inexplicably drawn to. The sunshine has hit and I'm ready to embrace spring and really lean in. If this means switching out my usual makeup wardrobe, I'm happy to experiment. Actually, blending those light and mid-shades across my eyes was less confronting than I expected – and no-one batted an eyelid when I sat at my desk with light-wash denim lids. In fact, I got a fair few compliments from people asking after my eyeshadow, which really lifted my whole complexion. I like that this palette can take you from cutesy pale shimmers for girly brunches, all the way to deep, inky indigos that would work for a smoky eye on date night.

Since sometime circa 2017, my signature eye makeup look has been all about warmth. Copper-y, bronze-y hues; pinks if I'm feeling crazy. Blue eyeshadow, to me, felt terrifying. Not only was I unconvinced this cool-toned eyeshadow palette would suit my colouring (post application, I still feel the same way), but I also concluded that it might be a bit much for a normal day in the office. It's by Victoria Beckham, though, so I was more than willing to give it a try. Credit where credit's due, VB has somehow gone a long way in converting me. Granted, I was still too shy to try the bright and navy blues – but the powder blue and sparkle shadow? I actually really rated them. They hit the sweet spot between pigmented and pretty, and the staying power was seriously impressive. I applied them both at around 7am, and by mid-afternoon, they still looked untouched. Am I going to be ditching my bronze go-tos for blue everyday? No, but the formula has certainly got me searching for the same VB palette in different colours.

The product: Dior Vernis Glowmania Limited Edition in 008 Bluemania

When it comes to nails, I'm an understated girl at the best of times so Dior's Bluemania Nail Polish is the perfect amount of shimmer for me. The most gorgeous opalescent blue, I love the softness of the shade, with fine glitter adding a touch of subtle glamour. I found the brush picked up a lot of product so I had to be more considered with my application, but when I did get the hang of it, the polish dried off well and fairly quickly. Two coats gave the lighter denim blue shimmer I was after but I'd love to see what this looks like layered with other polishes.

I often use a half-wing to give my eyes more of an almond shape, but typically rely on any pen-like black liner from Boots. I loved the slightly softer shade of blue — but even more, how easy it was to apply. With one swoop, I had a subtle line that I could easily build come Saturday night. My only pet peeve was finding a (clean) eyeliner brush to apply it with. Now I've solved that problem, I'll be using it on the daily.
