Sister Jane is one of those brands I fear I discovered too late. Not due to lack of its popularity – Milly Bobby Brown, Pixie Lott, Ellie Goldstein, Anne-Marie and Louise Thompson have all been spotted wearing the up-and-coming label in recent years – but personally, I hadn't taken a step towards adding its romantic; whimsical pieces into my wardrobe. That was, until, I visited their Notting Hill showroom earlier this month.

A nostalgic and elevated label based in London, Sister Jane excels in unexpected and unique silhouettes – serving frills, embellishments and bows to an Instagram generation. Every piece exudes an air of exclusivity – new capsule collections launch on-site every six weeks, which means every piece feels like a limited-edition gem – not only nodding to retro styles but current trends, too.

Take their latest Dream collection, for example: puffed sleeves, pearl embellishments and rose motifs pay homage to the flouncy, futuristic babydoll styles seen at Coperni, Valentino and David Koma at the start of the season. Elsewhere, plaid tops, hair bows, skirts and dresses (of which I tried on a few – keep reading) mirror the preference for check seen at Loewe and Helmut Lang for AW24. Cool-yet-cosy pieces like a long pleated skirt at Burberry and a floor-length tartan dress at aforementioned Loewe certainly provided inspiration for Sister Jane's latest drop.

I ended up trying on 10 different Sister Jane outfits during my visit that each felt perfectly fitting to my AW requirements: party-appropriate jeans, jacquard dresses suited to winter weddings, and the most gorgeous bow-adorned denim shirt which I can't wait to wear with similarly dark-washed jeans. And that's before I even started on the menswear collection, which features some unisex gems I'm so glad I discovered.

Itching for an autumnal wardrobe upgrade? Welcome to my Sister Jane Dressing Room Diary.

1. The Gingham Top

The Arabella gingham top, despite being one of the simplest pieces I tried on, was my favourite of the day. Influenced by one of the biggest trends of autumn/winter, it's cut at a really flattering length and in a shimmering fabric. It has an elasticated bodice and looked great with the brand's new pearl-embellished jeans (more on those later). Love the print but want a slightly subtler injection? There's also a checked hair bow and handbag in the new collection.

2. The Wedding Guest Dress

I've not got any winter weddings coming up, but if I did, you bet I'd be wearing the Opera Jacquard Mini Dress – accessorised with plenty of gold jewellery and some leopard print heels. Designed to command attention, it's loose-fitting and crafted from luxurious floral jacquard. It's fully lined – the quality was impeccable – and has pockets for storing your essentials. So. Good.

3. The Christmas Party Get-Up

I know it's only September – and I know Christmas parties still feel like a little way off. But pass me a sparkly, heart-shaped handbag and I can't help but get excited for festive cocktail soirees and the countdown to December 25th.

I don't usually love anything with a drop-hem – I have wide hips and don't find the silhouette to flatter me – but this nude pink Whisper Cami Dress was a surprising win. With adjustable cami straps and gorgeous ruffle detailing, it felt timeless and elegant; something I'd wear for years to come. I loved the contrast satin bows, which have not only been added to the chest, but to the bottoms of the shoulder straps, too.

4. The Bow-Adorned Denim Shirt

The Lyrical Bow Shirt caught my eye as soon as I arrived at the Sister Jane studio. As per the rest of the fashion set, I've been loving a double denim moment lately – and adding a smattering of bows to my usual jeans-and-denim-shirt get-up felt like a playful upgrade. It's actually from the menswear collection, which means it has a beautifully boxy fit and oversized sleeves. I also love the Lyrical Bow Mini Dress (pictured below) if you want something even more feminine.

5. The Bow-Tie Day Dress

I felt like a kid in a candy store for the entirety of my Sister Jane visit – you've probably gathered that much by now – but no piece got me feeling quite as intoxicated as this gem of a drawstring mini dress. So cute, so playful. I felt myself prancing around the showroom almost uncontrollably, loving the loose-fit, pale blue hue and adjustable neck tie. Understated yet impactful.

6. The Pearl-Embellished Jeans

If you're looking for an easy way to upgrade your bog-standard jeans-and-a-white-tee office outfit, these jeans are it. An autumn wardrobe essential, IMO, they're high-waisted and crafted from a fabric soft enough to convince you you're wearing joggers. The all-over pearl studs add a bit of extra party, and the adjustable waist belt helps you tailor them to your own body shape. Love, love, love.

7. The Checked Co-Ord

Very pyjama-esque, granted but I loved this two-piece. On reflection, I perhaps wouldn't wear the shirt and trousers together – they're from the menswear collection and come up a little too boxy – but I've picked them up to wear apart. The shirt, open atop a white t-shirt and with barrel-leg jeans, and the trousers with and wrap-over blazer and ballet flats.

8. The Statement Earrings

No love letter to Sister Jane would be complete without a nod to their glorious jewellery. These beautiful flower-shaped earrings, featuring a sparkling gem stud centre, caught my eye on my way out of the Sister Jane studio, proving the British fashion brand nails so much more than floaty dresses and denim. An elegant finishing touch to any Sister Jane outfit.

9. The Bow-Detail Jacket

Disclaimer: I didn't actually have time to try this jacket on, so I can't vouch for its fit. But what I can vouch for is the quality. Double-lined for a flawless finish, suitably warm and cut from tweed, I couldn't leave it hanging without snapping a photo. Perfect for adding elegance and class to any outfit – and finished with the most adorable bow embellishments.

10. The Navy Work Trousers

These trousers fitted like a dream. They're lightweight and high-waisted, with flatteringly-cut wide legs and delicate ruffle trims. A gorgeous alternative to jeans this season and best worn with a crisp white shirt.
