Water-based lubes are, perhaps, the most popular sub-category in the wonderful world of lubricants. This is mainly due to the fact they're safe to use with latex condoms and silicone sex toys, plus super gentle on the skin and typically don't stain your sheets.

However, trying to find the right water-based lube for you is a bit like the hunt for the best night cream, or the perfect pair of barrel-leg jeans — it's never that easy. Often, it involves multiple rounds of personal testing and a decent level of personal investment. That's unless you have access to a team of GLAMOUR writers and editors who have spent the last four years testing the very best lubricants on the market.

A quick reminder that the purpose of lube — whether you choose to use a water-based option, one loaded with silicone, or a hybrid variety — is to reduce the friction you feel when experimenting with a clit vibrator or penetration with a partner. This should also mitigate the risk of injury, discomfort and tearing. For reference, 57% of British women say they have experienced pain or discomfort during intercourse to the point that they had to stop. In short: lube is important.

So, welcome to our carefully curated edit of the best water-based lubricants for friction-free play for 2025, as well as answers to all those frequently asked questions.

The best water-based lubes, at a glance:

Meet the experts:

  • Megwyn White, certified sexologist and Director of Education at Satisfyer.

What is water-based lube?

A reminder that water-based is just one of the various options when it comes to lube:

TypeDetails
Silicone lubeThick, slick and often slow to go tacky, this style is best suited to anal play and those struggling with dryness. And while safe to use with metal or glass sex toys, it should absolutely be avoid when self-pleasuring with silicone teasers.
Oil-based lubeBuilt for those who enjoy a massage as a regular part of their foreplay, and commonly contain plant-based oils like sweet almond oil, coconut or sunflower seed. Just be aware that this style is not safe to use with condoms and will stain sheets.
Hybrid lubeSometimes a combination of water and silicone-based lubricants, these are designed to give us the perks of both without having to pay for two separate bottles.

Safe to use with latex condoms and silicone sex toys, water-based lube is often considered one of the more natural options. However, we should mention that the H2O base is often infused with xanthan gum or agar to give it that smooth, slightly thicker texture that helps body parts and/or your devices glide past each other.

How we test the best water-based lubes:

We'll spare you the intimate details, glossing over the exact sex positions and vibrators we've used over the last four years to put claims about thickness and lasting power to the test. However, we can confirm that a range of GLAMOUR writers and editors — all identifying as either female, male or gender-neutral, plus aged between 24 and 45 — volunteered to take home a bottle or two.

Each team member considered the packaging, before turning their attention to the contents inside. Smell, taste and how much-added slide each water-based lube offered were all taken into consideration before each lotion was rated out of 10. Spoiler: only those scoring seven and above have been mentioned below.

Ahead, the 13 best water-based lubes for women and people with vulvas to shop in 2025:

1. Best Water-Based Lube Overall: Roam Lube For The Front

Roam Lube For The Front

Pros:

  • The square design of the bottle should stop it from rolling out of reach.
  • The addition of braille down the size benefits short-sighted users.

Cons:

  • Mimics your “natural wetness,” so apply generously.

Why GLAMOUR loves it: With various team members labelling this the “best lube I've ever used,” we had no option but to sit Roam — also known for developing the world's first skin-tone condoms — at the top of the podium. Aside from the stylish branding and recycled packaging (we also love the addition of braille which makes this product much more inclusive), the formula is lightweight, vegan-friendly and long-lasting — not always the case with water-based lubes. Infused with aloe vera and jojoba, it hydrates without any irritation, plus contains a microbiome prebiotic that should prevent a sway in your intimate pH.

Why GLAMOUR loves it: Compatible for use with both latex condoms and silicone-coated vibrators, this vegan water-based lube feels super silky and is easy to wash off with warm, soapy water. Our team were also big fans of the discreet packaging that avoids any mention of the words “sex,” “masturbation” or “sexual lubricant.” Essentially, it's great for leaving on display at your bedside or chucking in your carry-on.

The brand's lube is, once again, made from all-natural ingredients, plus free from parabens, petroleum, glycerin and synthetic fragrance. In terms of wetness, this falls somewhere between natural lubrication and uncontrollable slip n’ slide. Essentially, start with one dollop and see how you go.

Why GLAMOUR loves it: This water-based lubricant from Jomo London is a total game-changer, doubling as both a sexual wellness essential and a possible enhancer. Yeah, really. That's due to the addition of L’Arginine, a circulation and blood flow booster which could lead to heightened sensitivity and, consequently, bigger orgasms. Dame Aloe Lube

Pros:

  • Comes house in a textured silicone koozie which hugs your bottle to keep it in your grasp. Smart!
  • One review raved: “My favourite lube of all time. A very natural consistency and perfect viscosity… I only wish it came in a larger size with an easier pump (this one tends to dribble unless you use two hands, and that's not always possible).”

Cons:

  • At the pricier end of the spectrum.

Why GLAMOUR loves it: Described by the brand as a “nightstand wallflower,” our testers appreciated that this one came in a chic, electric blue bottle that they were proud to leave on display. But also pH-balanced and infused with aloe vera, it feels light and silky but never sticky. An added bonus: Dame's Aloe comes wrapped in a silicone grippy sleeve which makes it easier to hold onto the bottle when you're applying the lube one-handed. They've considered it all.

The London-based creators choose to stick with a mix of exclusively natural ingredients and have skipped glycerin which has, in some research, been linked with yeast infections like thrush. Yeah, no thanks.

  • Bottle size: 240ml.
  • Cap type: Pump.

What are the benefits of using water-based lube?

“Water-based lube is the LBD of lube,” certified sex & relationships psychotherapist and sex expert at sextoys.co.uk, Gigi Engle says. “They are the most easily accessible and versatile choice because they are compatible with all toys and condoms. When in doubt, a water-based lube is your best choice.” Preach.

Thanks to their versatility, water-based lubes can be used during solo sessions, partnered penetrative sex and anal sex. “If you're looking for a natural feel, water-based lubes are great for this — plus there are even varieties that create pleasant tingling sensations during lovemaking,” added Megwyn White, certified Sexologist and Director of Education at Satisfyer.

How long does water-based lube typically last?

One of the (very few) downsides when it comes to using the water-based variety is that they do tend to dry, meaning you'll need to reapply. “That’s just the way it is because they are water-based and get absorbed quickly,” continues Engle.

Are there any reasons you shouldn’t use water-based lube?

Nope, everyone should regularly be using lube and water-based is a fairly safe bet if you're looking for something that won't irritate your skin but still helps to banish friction while using a sex toy or playing with a partner. So, you can imagine our dismay when we read one study which reported that 62% of women had never used a personal lubricant.

As mentioned, water-based lube doesn't have the best lasting power due to its high quantity of H2O and will wash off easily when used in the shower and/or tub. Plus, it tends to be a little thinner than silicone lubricants, so might not provide the added glide needed for anal sex (a reminder that, unlike the vagina, the back entrance isn't self-lubricating and so lube is necessary to avoid painful friction and tears).
